Artwork 1of 1
Artwork-code: TOBO-00227
Category: Woodcarvings - Pre War
Description: Animal playing a flute, made on Bali in the 30-40ties.
Period: 1930-1940
Comment: This carving was exhibited during the exhibition "ART DECO ON BALI" in the Nusantara Museum in Delft (Holland) in 2005. In the book "Art Deco Sculptures From Bali 1930-1970" published simultaniously by Frans Leidelmeier, this carving is shown on pages 74 and 75 (last photo). Magnificent carved statue full of whit and humour. Watch for example the shape of the body (a fallus) which repeats itself in the flute. Also the masterly carved left foot with the slightly erected toe and the intricate folds in the dress prove that the sculptor intended to make an artwork which goes against all existing traditions at that time on Bali.
